Do you carry x-yarn or x-fabric by so-and-so designer?

At some point hopefully very, very soon the entire contents of our shop will be online as well. So chances are, if you don’t see the item you are looking for online, we don’t stock it. We are however, pretty knowledgeable about the 160+ different yarns that we stock and experienced at substituting yarns in patterns, so it’s unlikely that you’ll go home empty-handed. That being said, depending on quantities needed, we are always happy to special order specific items or additional stock for customers, on a case-by-case basis. Email us with your enquiry and we’ll do our best to help you out.

Do you stock any knitting patterns?

We stock a selection of mostly baby and kids’ clothing and accessory patterns, as well as some adult basics and personal favourites. Adults are usually very specific about garments they will wear, and we are unable to accommodate everybody’s personal preferences. Ravelry is the crocheter’s and knitter’s best friend and knowing how to correctly use their ‘advanced pattern search’ feature will open up a whole new world of inspiration and resources. Here’s an excellent video tutorial. Doing some research and finding a pattern before you visit will make your shopping experience much more enjoyable and we will be happy to match you up with the perfect yarn for your project. We also participate in the Ravelry In-Store sales program – you can purchase your pattern through our store at no additional cost and we will print it out for you (and provide you with a free plastic sleeve to keep it safe!).

Can you wind my yarn into a ball?

Yes, we can! Please note that we only wind yarn that has been purchased at our shop. No exceptions. Wound yarns are final sale and cannot be returned for store credit.

Do you offer classes?

We do not teach classes at the moment. However, with our new schedule we are planning to schedule occasional classes. Sign up for our newsletter to receive news, offers and updates. We do however, offer links to some excellent free websites such as or that have free tutorials and videos that will help you learn and and build on your skills. And we’re always happy to offer advice and share tips with our customers!

I need help with my project, can I drop in for some assistance?

Provided your materials are purchased from us, we will do our best to offer advice and basic troubleshooting. This is done at our discretion and a courtesy that we offer customers when we are able to. We do not offer support for yarns and patterns not purchased at our shop. You can find free online help and basic fixes on sites such as

Do you send samples?

We do not offer samples, but for fabric, you can order as little as a quarter yard. For yarn, we regret that we cannot offer samples for free or otherwise, since it would take away yardage from the skein.

Do you have sales?

Due to being short-staffed (see below), we currently can’t accommodate in-store sale events. However, on our online store there is a permanent sale section, where you can browse and shop online and pick up in store if you are in the neighbourhood (or have it shipped!). We also plan on having special online promotions.

Are you part of a chain or franchise? Do you have other locations?

Nope, this is it! The one and only Modern Bee is a family owned independent business. We have many customers from out of town who stop in while travelling around Niagara who have encouraged us to expand our online store, as many of them continue to shop with us once they are back home in other parts of Canada, the United States, and even as far as Australia and New Zealand (many Kaffe Fassett fans on the opposite end of the world!)

Why are your hours so weird?

‘We’ currently are a staff of one (me!) plus very occasional help. One of the sisters has moved abroad for a year. With our healthy online mail order volume, preparing our popular quilt kits and running the website and backend of the shop (darn those tech gremlins!), we are unable to remain open to the public 7 days a week as we used to. Check our calendar for available dates and times to make an appointment to see us, we try to be as flexible as possible to accommodate morning, afternoon and evening hours (just not on the same day!).

Why don’t you answer the phone anymore?

Due to high call volumes, we have recently set our phone to voicemail only to be able to offer our in-store customers more attentive service. Messages will be responded to within 3 business days.
